Am I the only one who is sick of all this "going green" stuff? It seems to be all that everyone is talking about these days. It's worked into tv and movie scripts and I can't even pick up a magazine without there being at least one article on the subject. I know the planet is in trouble and we all need to do our best to help the co2 situation, but I'm tired of hearing about it all the time like it's late breaking news. Maybe it's because I've always been "green". I've always recycled whenever it was possible and have never been one for over packaging or disposable. I never learned how to drive until I absolutely had to because I was going to be on my own practically in the middle of no where. It was so much easier and cheaper to take the bus or Skytrain (rapid transit train for my non-Vancouverite readers.) Now that Mother Earth is in danger, it has suddenly become the "in" thing. I think it's just common sense. Everyone should always be doing what they can, not only for the environment, but for their own health and peace of mind.
If you want to check out what your carbon footprint is on the world go to carbonfootprint.com and click on the "calculator" tab on the left. According to this site the average output of co2 in the US is 20.4 tonnes per person. The average in industrialized nations is 11 tonnes. My score is 6.546 tonnes. I was so happy, but not surprised, that my scrore was well below the national average. However, to make any kind of climate change, the world has to get down to 2 tonnes of co2 per person. That's a big difference.
I will always do what I can for the planet and the future of my children. I guess all this "going green" stuff has showed me that I can always do better.

Yikes. My footprint was 11. You are good!
Yikes! Ours was 14!! Holy Schmoly, I'm embarassed! We had the most in the driving area. I drive 12,000 miles per year and Jimmy drives quite a bit and we got extra "points" against us for having so many cars (although we don't drive them all) We are better than the national average but still...way too much. I think I have a new goal!
One more thing...I agree. I commented to Jimmy the other day...I'm going to puke if I hear "going green" one more time. Can't we use a new phrase? Instead I'm going to say, "I'm trying to be a conscientous consumer instead of a mindless earth maiming machine" I guess that isn't as catchy as "going green"
Sarah - You are so funny! I love "conscientious consumer", even if it's hard to spell!
I think my/our score was so low because we are vegetarians (Will is at home) and we recycle/compost more than 50% of our waste. And, apart from driving to Vancouver once a year, I hardly drive any where. I'm such a home body. And Will rides his scooter a lot.
I didn't get a chance to tell you in your blog how proud I am of you for taking the bus and riding bikes more. It's really hard to make those kinds of changes, but it sounds like you are all doing well. Good work!!
Hi Robyn - good poll! Jason and I just did the test and we were at 7. But it might be between 6 and 7 because we had to approximate on some things. We put the km in too high for the car - the car seems to make the biggest difference, doesn't it?
