Poll Results

Here are the results for who you think makes the best James Bond:

     2 votes Sean Connery
     1 vote Roger Moore
     2 votes Pierce Brosnan

I had a hard time choosing between Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan. Sean is the classic James Bond and Pierce is the modern day version. Both are pretty easy on the eyes and are believable as the swashbuckling spy that the ladies croon over. In the end I chose Pierce Brosnan because he looks more like my image of what James Bond should look like. Sean Connery has always looked old to me and 007 should be a younger looking man.

Having said that, here is what the James Bond author, Ian Fleming, thought Her Majesty's spy should look like:

Most people believe that James Bond is a romanticized version of Ian Fleming. They have similar backgrounds and tastes, and Fleming was a traveller and womanizer just like 007.

The Great Pumpkin Train Ride

Yesterday the Rogers clan all went on a train ride from Horseshoe Bend to a little clearing a half hour away where everyone could pick pumpkins. Although it wasn't a real pumpkin patch where you can choose your pumpkin right off the vine, it was set up with lots of scarecrows and pumpkins galore scattered all over. The kids loved it. And the day was perfect. On previous trips it has been very cold, but this time it was warm and sunny. It couldn't have been better.

The pumpkin patch

We were happy that Kordon and Morgan were able to come with us this time.

The cousins (from L-R): Liam, Moira, Morgan, Jamie, Kyla and Olivia

Liam found his!

Liam loved the train. He liked to stand up and look over the side. I think he liked to feel the wind in his hair.

Kordon and Kyla having a cuddle. Ever since Kordon found out that we named Kyla "Joanne" after his late wife and Will's sister, he has taken a shine to her. He even nicknamed her "Bug".

Poll Results

Finally! Here are the results for what is your dream vacation.

2 votes travel to an exotic country
     1 vote stay at home
     1 vote sailing
2 votes staying at a tropical resort

I voted for the exotic country. It must the gypsy blood in me that makes me want to travel far and wide. My first stop - India. There is something about the food, the clothes, the colours that call out to me to come. But it is a place that I would want to go with just a friend. I feel like it's a trip that I would enjoy more if I was more on my own. Don't ask me why. Maybe because I don't want to be inhibited by others. My second stop - Scotland. I want to see where Nana and her people are from. This is a trip that I would want to go with my family. I want my kids to learn to love to travel and appreciate other cultures.

What did you vote for?

Nana's Quilt

Ever since it was announced that there was going to be a big bash for Nana's 80th birthday, I knew I wanted to do something special for her. I decided to make her a quilt with all of our pictures on it. I immediately contacted all of my family members for photos of them with their families. This is how it turned out:

(A special thanks goes out to Terhi who happily answered my endless questions and went out of her way to help me. )

Our Trip, part V

The Final Journey

After taking the ferry back to the mainland we headed straight for the border. I always feel anxious when I know I'm on my way back to the States. I start feeling homesick even before I've left. I try to memorize every tree and building and blade of grass. I don't want to forget anything about the place where I grew up. It was especially hard this trip after seeing all of my family and being at the beach and amongst the trees. All of those "things" make up who I am and how I think. I can't undo any of those influences on my being. I didn't want to start bawling in front of my kids so I just looked out the window and took some photos.

The Burnaby skyline way off in the distance. I miss how the clouds get hung up on our coastal mountains.

Another city skyline.

I used to wish that I lived in this windmill when I was a kid. It looks like it was transplanted right off some Tuscan hillside.

It felt like we spent so much of our trip in the car. No one seemed to mind, though.

Somewhere near La Connor.

Will and I had decided that on the last night of our trip we would stay at a hotel somewhere. We knew that after spending seven nights in the tent trailer we would deserve to spend the night in a real bed and have a real shower. We had driven past the Tulalip Casino many times and decided that would be a nice place to stay. At first I was nervous about staying in a hotel with a casino, but then I saw lots of other kids there. I didn't feel quite so bad after that. Will and I love the art of the Pacific Coast First Nations peoples so this was up our alley. I wanted to steal every framed piece off the walls. The halls displayed lots of great art and the casino had a water theme. Fishing and the ocean were such an important part of the Coastal peoples' way of life.

Check out this shower with the three water heads. A little piece of heaven right there.

We were even provided with super soft bath towels and robes.

And the piece de resistance...

the mini bar! There was pop and juice, champagne and lots of little bottles of booze! It was glorious! Moira liked that there were chocolate bars and tins of nuts. I told her she wasn't even allowed to breathe on them. I could only imagine what they must charge for those things.

We also had a wide screen TV which the kids immediately turned on. A week without tv and they were starting to get the jitters. They didn't even mind that there were no cartoons on. They were happy to watch anything.

Inside the entrance of the hotel.

The outside of the hotel.

Coming into the main entrance of the complex was this great scene of a fisherman trying to spear salmon and killer whales near by. There were water falls and a pretty walk way around it all. The entrance to the casino was straight ahead, where as the hotel entrance was off to the side. I joked to Will that it was nicer walking into the casino than it was the hotel.

I
I had to take a shot of this man wearing traditional clothing and catching his meal the old way juxtaposed against the very modern hotel. It kind of says a lot of the First Nations in the 21st century - they are still able to spear fish and hold on to old rights as well as have the modern casinos. These are things that we newcomers are not allowed to share. Funny.

After our rest at the hotel, we decided to take the scenic route through downtown Seattle instead of taking the 405 around the city. Moira and I get a kick out of driving under the city. Plus we like to look at the Space Needle. This was the first time in a long time that I wasn't the one driving so I actually got to take a good look.

That's My Boy!

It was just Liam and I tonight. We were busy playing on the floor when he found one of the girls' pony tail ties. Liam's hair is getting long and it keeps getting in his eyes, so I decided to put the tie in his hair. Here are the results.

He really disliked the tie in his hair so as soon as I took these pics I took it out. I guess it's just about time for his first hair cut.

Our Trip, part IV

Visit with Lise and the Ferry Ride from the Island

We got an all too brief with my friend Lise in Victoria. It went by so fast. I love that, even though we don't visit that often, it's like no time has passed. We fit comfortably back into each other. It's that way with the kids, too. We'll barely walk in the door and the kids are off playing together. (Thanks to Lise for letting me use her photos. Ours didn't turn out as well.)

It only took a few minutes for Lane and Liam to get into the Hot Wheels.

Max and Moira are only three weeks apart. They are so much alike that it's spooky. Lise and I joke that we should set them up in an arranged marriage.

Kyla and Lily

Lise and I and our boys chatting on the bed. We made ourselves comfortable and settled in for some catching up.

Getting all the kids together long enough to take a picture was no easy feat. Kyla didn't want to sit with them so she just stood off to the side. Somehow Jason managed to still get her in the shot.
------------------------------------------------------------

On Thursday we started on our trek back to Boise. We took the ferry back over to the Mainland. It's always a fun ride. The ferries are really nice with a restaurant, cafe, boutique, arcade, a play area for the kids and lots of great views. It's like being on a short cruise. This particular route that we took back has the nicest views through the Gulf Islands and is the shortest of all the routes at 1 hour 20 minutes long.

The ferry has two vehicle decks and can easily fit over a couple hundred cars and large semi-trucks.

Leaving the dock.

We couldn't do anything without Kyla having a tantrum.

The passages between the islands are narrow. I'm amazed how well these large ferries are able to maneuver through them.
